Pa. auto Insurance 100 mile from home college student discount law.?
I live in the state of Pennsylvania. My question is does anyone know if Pa. auto insurance laws don’t allow insurance companies to give you a discount on your rates if you have a college student attending school at least 100 miles from home. I recently saw this on the Motley Fool site about how to save money on your auto insurance rates. When I contacted my agent she said Pa. doesn’t allow such a discount. Thanks

Lawmakers aren’t going to concern themselves with insurance discounts, they let the market take care of that. It all depends on what the individual insurers underwriting rules are. Apparently your insurer does not, according to your agent, however I seriously doubt she knows every insurers rules in the state. Therefore your best bet is to contact several different agents/brokers in your area and ask them if their insurers offer such a discount.
It’s not a law. Insurance companies can, if they want, give an “away at college” discount, IF the student is more than 100 miles from home, WITHOUT A CAR.
I’ve HAD a PA license for a long time. Either your agent doesn’t know what she’s talking about, OR, she only represents one company that does NOT give an away at school discount.
Most companies in PA do this. BUT. If you have a car with you, you’re not entitled.
